IRCC Update on Work Eligibility Off Campus Dec 7th, 2023

Who can work for more than 20 hours per week off campus? 

 

For international students currently studying at a NU Canadian campus with valid study permit, if your study permit application (including extension application) was received by IRCC on or before Oct 7, 2022, you may continue to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions until April 30, 2024, provided that you continue to meet eligibility requirements for working off campus. 

 

For international students currently studying at a NU Canadian campus with valid study permit, if your study permit application was received by IRCC between Oct 8, 2022 and Dec 7, 2023, you may be eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions starting from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024, provided that you continue to meet eligibility requirements for working off campus. 

 

For international students currently studying at a NU Canadian campus on implied status, meaning that your study permit has expired but you applied for study permit extension prior to the expiry date, if your study permit extension application was received by IRCC between Oct 8, 2022 and Dec 7, 2023, you may be eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions starting from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024, provided that you continue to meet eligibility requirements for working off campus.

  1. My study permit application was received by IRCC before Oct 7, 2022. It will expire on Dec 31, 2023 but I applied for study permit extension on Dec 8, 2023. Am I allowed to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus during academic sessions from Jan to April 2024 under the temporary public policy, provided that I meet all the other requirements for working off campus?
    • You may work for more than 20 hours per week off campus until Dec 31, 2023 before your current study permit expires. Starting from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024, you no longer qualify under the public policy and therefore you may only work up to 20 hour per week off campus on your study permit. You should stop studying and/or working immediately if your study permit extension is refused and contact OGS Canada team ASAP.
  2. My study permit application was received by IRCC before Oct 7, 2022. It will expire on Dec 31, 2023 but I applied for study permit extension on Dec 1, 2023. Am I allowed to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus during academic sessions from Jan to April 2024 under the temporary public policy, provided that I meet all the other requirements for working off campus?
    • Since your study permit extension application was received by IRCC before Dec 7, 2023, if you continue to meet all the requirements for working off campus, you might be eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus during academic sessions from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024. You should stop studying and/or working immediately if your study permit extension is refused and contact OGS Canada team ASAP.
  3. My study permit application was received by IRCC on Nov 1, 2022 and my study permit is valid until Dec 31, 2024. If I meet all the requirements for off campus work, when can I start working for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions?
    • Based on the temporary public policy, you might be eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus starting from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024, provided that you continue to meet eligibility requirements for working off campus.
  4. My study permit application was received by IRCC on Nov 1, 2022 and my study permit is valid until Dec 31, 2023. I managed to apply for study permit extension on Dec 1, 2023. If I meet all the requirements for off campus work, am I eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions in 2024?
    • Based on the temporary public policy, since you applied for study permit extension before Dec 7, 2023, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements, you might be eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus from Jan 1, 2023 to April 30, 2023 while you are waiting for a decision on your study permit extension application. You should stop studying and/or working immediately if your study permit extension is refused and contact OGS Canada team ASAP.
  5. My study permit application was received by IRCC on Nov 1, 2022 and my study permit is valid until Dec 31, 2023. I wasn’t able to submit the study permit extension application until Dec 8, 2023. If I meet all the requirements for off campus work, am I eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions in 2024?
    • Since your study permit extension application was received by IRCC after Dec 7, 2023, you are not eligible to work for more than 20 hours per week during academic sessions under the temporary policy. You may work full-time during scheduled breaks but you may only work for up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions, provided that you meet eligibility requirements for working off campus. You should stop studying and/or working immediately if your study permit extension is refused and contact OGS Canada team ASAP.
  6. I’m in my final academic semester/quarter and I have been working full-time off campus because I qualify under the previous public policy to work for more than 20 hours per week until Dec 31, 2023, with this new announcement am I allowed to continue to work in Jan 2024 while waiting for the Letter of Completion? 
    • If you qualified under the previous public policy to work for more than 20 hours per week off campus during academic sessions, you may continue to work in your final semester/quarter under the same conditions until the day either of the following happens, whichever comes first. 
      •  You receive written confirmation from NU that you have completed the program, such as Letter of Completion and/or final transcript, and/or  
      • Your study permit becomes invalid
