Services for J-1 Scholars

OGS offers virtual drop-in advising for J-1 scholars on Zoom every Wednesday* from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Eastern Time. Please see here for the Zoom link and instructions for joining. 

*Note: if the Wednesday falls on an official University holiday, when OGS is closed, there will be no drop-in advising that day.

• The dedicated email address for J-1 scholars at Northeastern is: [email protected] 
• J-1 scholars, Northeastern HR contacts and administrators, and current/prospective faculty hosts of J-1 exchange visitors may contact OGS through this email address.  
• This is the recommended method of contacting OGS for the J-1 scholar population and host departments. 
• NOTE: F-1/J-1 students should see this page for OGS contact information. We are unable to respond to inquiries from F-1/J-1 students sent to the scholars email.

• New J-1 scholars who are paid by Northeastern University must complete an I-9.  
• After you have arrived in the U.S., you must complete the OGS Researcher Confirmation of Arrival Process e-form, and complete Section 1 of your I-9 online.  
• Once the above steps are completed, you may call OGS at 617-373-2310 to make an I-9 Section 2 appointment (note: Visiting Students must go to the Student Employment Office for Section 2).
• These appointments are offered either in-person on the Boston campus, or virtual. 
• Note: no I-9 appointment is required for J-1 scholars extending their program.
